Introduction: What is Biology?

Biology is the study of life and living organisms. It is a type of science that focuses on nature. Under this broad study, there is a wide range of fields and unifying principles tat helps us understand the structure of life, functions of life, growth of living beings, our origin, evolution, and distribution of all life.

There are five fundamental themes in biology:

  • Cells as the basic unit of life

  • Genes and heredity as the basis of inheritance

  • Evolution as the operator of biological diversity

  • Energy transformation for sustaining life processes

  • Homeostasis as the maintenance of internal stability

Biology is all about life, and you can learn a lot from it. What we've discovered so far are just a tiny portion of what this world has to offer.

Here are some examples of some disciplines under the vast coverage of biology:

  • Molecular biology

  • Physiology

  • Ecology

  • Evolutionary biology

  • Developmental biology

  • Systematics

And much, much more.

Each and every one of these specific fields apply a range of methods to investigate and explore biological phenomena. These include observation, experimentation, and modelling of mathematics. Modern biology is based off of the Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection (C. Darwin) and DNA and its related information. This allowed humans to unlock many other areas of biology, as shown above. The advancements reach beyond the field of science and are applied to medicine, agriculture, technology, and our environment.
